The Medieval Museum under Norrbro will close on 5 Nov 2023

Sunday 5 November 2023 is the last chance to visit the Medieval Museum under the Norrbro bridge on the island of Helgeandsholmen. Then everything will be packed away until it’s time to move into new premises in Börshuset on Stortorget, the main square in the Old Town. The Medieval Museum will keep on running activities in the form of city walks, guided tours of historical areas in the Old Town, digital tours, lectures and school visits. Unique museum venture

In 2022, the Culture Committee made a strategic decision to undertake the biggest museum venture in decades, with a new museum in the oldest heart of the city. The new Medieval Museum will be established in Börshuset at Stortorget in the Old Town – in a truly medieval setting – next to Stockholm Cathedral and Stockholm’s oldest named street, Köpmangatan. Here, visitors will be welcomed to an attractive museum in a unique environment, at a natural meeting place for Stockholmers and tourists.With creative design and an innovative use of technology, the museum will tell the story of life in the medieval city, the origins of Stockholm and the development of the Old Town.

Why is the Medieval Museum moving?

The Medieval Museum’s current premises under the Norrbro bridge will be taken over by the Administrative Office of the Swedish Parliament, which owns the majority of the premises. The Administrative Office of the Swedish Parliament needs the premises under Norrbro for its activities.

Where is the Medieval Museum moving to?

A new Medieval Museum will be housed in Börshuset. At present, the Nobel Prize Museum is renting the premises in Börshuset, but they will in turn be moving to newly built premises at Slussen. We do not know yet exactly when the new museum will move into Börshuset and when it can open. But it is clear that the Medieval Museum will have no exhibition premises for some time. When is the Medieval Museum moving?

The Medieval Museum will be leaving Helgeandsholmen in 2024. To allow time to pack up artefacts and offices, the Museum will be closing to the public on 5 November 2023.
